May 23, 1873 the tradition of the Preakness race began. The winner was given a wreath made of the state flower: the Black-Eyed Susan. Or so they thought... What they really received was a wreath of yellow daisies that had their centers painted black. The race is held before the flowers are in bloom locally. However,  today with greenhouses, and being able to fly in flowers, the winners are given the real deal.
